Mosquitoes are a common nuisance in Laos, including the island of Don Khong. The tropical climate and abundance of water sources provide an ideal breeding ground for these pesky insects. The main species of mosquito found in this region is the Aedes mosquito, known for transmitting diseases such as dengue fever and Zika virus.

Due to the high prevalence of mosquitoes in Laos, residents and visitors to Don Khong are at risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases. Dengue fever is particularly concerning, with outbreaks occurring during the rainy season when mosquito populations are at their peak. Symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, and in severe cases, hemorrhagic fever which can be life-threatening.

Preventative measures such as wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and sleeping under mosquito nets are recommended to reduce the risk of mosquito bites and potential disease transmission. Additionally, efforts to control mosquito populations through spraying insecticides and eliminating breeding sites are ongoing in Don Khong and other areas of Laos.
